Panel Pot Products in conjunction with Poly Pot

Creels limited manufactures two types of plastic pots. A ‘D shaped’ prawn/velvet pot and a round prawn/shrimp one. Both of them are manufactured to a high standard enabling them to withstand rough weather. If the worst case scenario does happen, the pots are made up of panels so that partially damaged pots can be easily repaired with the ‘write-offs’ thus reducing replacement costs. Both can be easily weighted to your own area or preferences.

The Panel Pot has been carefully designed to have a very smooth finish inside thus minimizing the damage to the catch. The pot has a built-in mesh of 10 mm square allowing small prawns to escape, The design of the entrance cone stops the entry of small crabs and hermit crabs that would otherwise eat the bait and damage the catch. As a result, the cleaner catch reduces the sorting time. The importance of maintaining catch quality is crucial to getting the best price per kilo.

In line with the current thoughts in conservation larger holes can be made in the end cone to allow the escape of even larger prawns retaining only the largest ones wanted by the dealers.

Although the Panel Pot was originally designed to catch the Common Prawn it can be used to catch other species such as shore crabs (Carcinus maenus) by increasing the diameter of the entrance hole. Eels can be caught in single or double traps bolted together.

The D shaped pot was designed specifically for the Nephrops and Velvet crab fishery in Scotland and Ireland but has been used for other fisheries as well. It is popular for lobsters, crabs, prawns (shrimps), and freshwater crayfish.

It is easily weighted and is highly adaptable. The plastic entrance is rigid and doesn’t need re-tightening. It can be adapted for for larger crabs and smaller prawns/shrimps. Also, one entrance can be replaced with a blank which in some cases has been found to increase catch efficiency.

The slightly larger mesh of 12 mm has found favour with the prawn/shrimp fishermen who want a larger mesh pot. It can be weighted so as to float just above the seabed and catch just as efficiently as the round pot.

The nylon entrance can be used in other types of pots and is adaptable for both large and small target species. The picture above shows it in one of Poly Pot’s prawn creels.
